Quest Diagnostics said the personal and medical information of nearly 12 million people, including their Social Security numbers, has potentially been breached.
Quest, a company that specializes in blood testing, said in a Monday press release that an “unauthorized person” gained access to a system used by the American Medical Collection Agency, a billing collection vendor for one of the company’s contractors.
“AMCA believes this information includes personal information, including certain financial data, Social Security numbers, and medical information, but not laboratory test results,” the release said.
The agency has not yet provided further information on the potential data breach to Quest and its contractor, Optum360. Additionally, the company said it has “not been able to verify the accuracy of the information received from AMCA.”
After Quest learned about the incident in May, the company said it has stopped sending collection requests to the agency.
Quest said it would be working with Optum360 to provide notification to patients.
