Andrew Cuomo: NYC attack an effort ‘to create mayhem’ that failed

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday’s terror attack in New York City was “an effort to create mayhem and terrorize” that failed.

“The effort yesterday killed eight people,” Cuomo said in a press conference Wednesday. “But in my opinion the effort failed, because the effort was not to kill eight people, the effort was to disrupt us, to terrorize us, to scare us, to create mayhem.”

“It failed,” he said, noting the Halloween parade continuing as scheduled last night as proof.

“A million New Yorkers came out with their families, with their children,” he said. “They celebrated, they were there. Just a number of hours after the incident and it was New York’s way of saying we will not be deterred. We are not terrorized. You will not win.”

Cuomo added this isn’t a time to “point fingers” or to “find blame”, but rather a “time to come together and work for a common goal.”

New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio stated the attack was “the definition of terrorism, an effort to take away people’s hope and spirit and to make them change.”

DeBlasio emphasized there are no additional credible or specific threats to New York City.

Eight people were killed and 12 others injured in the attack on Tuesday, when a truck plowed into a crowd of pedestrians. Sayfullo Saipov, a 29 year old immigrant from Uzbekistan, has been identified as the suspect in the attack.
