Ninth victim dead in San Jose shooting as motive remains unclear

A ninth victim is dead from the Wednesday shooting near a light rail yard in San Jose, California.

Alex Ward Fritch, 49, died at the Santa Clara Medical Center after being in critical condition, according to a report by KTVU of the Bay Area.

Fritch’s death follows eight others who were gunned down by the alleged shooter identified as Sam James Cassidy, 57, who police say was employed at the Valley Transportation Authority rail yard. Cassidy took his own life after allegedly committing the shooting. He had no previous criminal record.

BOULDER SHOOTING SUSPECT MAKES SECOND COURTROOM APPEARANCE

“The whole crew is gone, the whole shift is gone. It’s horrible,” one VTA employee, who asked to remain anonymous, told the Mercury News.

Those who were killed included bus and light rail operators, mechanics, linemen, and the assistant superintendent. Cassidy was reported to be a maintenance worker at VTA.

Cassidy’s home was also the site of a suspicious fire on Wednesday morning that spread shortly before the shooting took place.

Police reportedly found cars lining the streets in front of Cassidy’s home through the afternoon and recalled a few reports of gasoline and ammunition that was found in the house.

Cassidy’s ex-wife, Cecilia Nelms, told the Associated Press that he had a bad temper and alleged he wanted to kill people at work.

“I never believed him, and it never happened. Until now,” Nelms said.
