Donald Trump said women have it easier than men do at a rally in Washington state on Saturday.
“I mean all of the men, we’re petrified to speak to women anymore,” Trump told the audience in Spokane. “We may raise our voice. You know what? Women get it better than we do folks. Alright? They get it better than we do.”
In a return to his refrain that “there is nobody that has more respect for women than me,” Trump added that “there is nobody, or certainly very few, that have promoted women within my big company [more] than I have.”
Mentioning that he probably should not being saying this, the billionaire businessman said he has gone as far as paying women working for him more than men doing comparable jobs.
“I have women that make more money than men doing a comparable job. Men, am I okay saying that? And they’re fantastic,” Trump said.
Trump said that over the course of the Republican nomination contest, he has been “winning with women in landslides.” However, polls suggest that Trump is struggling to win support nationally from female voters after sparking controversy with disparaging comments. According to a Gallup poll in April, seven in 10 women said they have an unfavorable opinion of Trump.
Trump also slammed Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, who he said plans to spend $90 million on “phony ads” attacking him for his comments about women. He claimed that much of what he said before he ran for office was for “entertainment.”
