Watch: Sen. Al Franken responds in real time to a Trump tweet

Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., reacted live on air to a tweet President Trump sent about China’s efforts to help reign in the brutal North Korean regime on Tuesday.

Trump said that he appreciated the efforts of China and President Xi Jinping in helping with North Korea, but it still “has not worked out,” adding, “at least I know China tried!”

When asked about it on MSNBC, Franken said that the president of China likely didn’t have anything to do with the release of U.S. citizen Otto Warmbier.

“I don’t know why he put the exclamation point on there, I don’t think he actually knows that. I don’t know, certainly in terms of this young man, if Xi did anything,” Al Franken said.

Trump’s tweet came after Warmbier, who was returned to the U.S. in a coma last week, died on Monday after being held in a North Korean prison for 18 months. The Trump administration has pressed China to pressure its neighbor, especially on the issue of its nuclear program.

“May I say, the president might be gullible when it comes to China,” Al Franken said.
