O’Malley: 75 percent of Maryland customers have power

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley said Tuesday that utility companies have restored power to 75 percent of customers who lost electricity in a storm that rocked the region Friday evening.

O’Malley celebrated the utilities’ progress but warned the problems remain for those residents still without power as temperatures climb into the upper 90s for the fourth straight day.

“We are now heading into probably the most dangerous part of this event,” O’Malley said. The longer the elderly spend in the heat, “the more worn out, the more vulnerable they become,” O’Malley said.

More than 271,000 residents are still without power in Maryland.

The state doubled the number of out-of-state crews to 2,000 on Tuesday, bringing the total restoration workforce to 8,000, O’Malley said.
