Students arrested in teacher attack at Wilson High

Four Woodrow Wilson High School students were arrested Thursday afternoon for allegedly attacking a gym teacher after he blew the whistle during an intramural basketball game.

The incident began about noon in the gym at the Northwest Washington campus.

One of the players complained about the foul call then attacked the gym teacher who was refereeing the game, said Cmdr. Andy Solberg. Another student joined in the attack and soon a melee of about 15 students broke out, Solberg said. He didn’t know whether the students were all attacking the teacher or fighting each other.

The gym teacher was able to escape from the gym and ran into an office for about 10 minutes, Solberg said. When the teacher came out, the students attacked him again. Two coaches and two D.C. police officers on campus broke up the fight.

Two students were arrested on charges of assault; two on charges of aggravated assault. One of the students was an adult, but police did not release his name Thursday.

The teacher was treated at the school for minor cuts.
