Melania Trump’s favorability approaches 50 percent in new poll

First lady Melania Trump’s favorability rating has almost reached 50 percent in a new poll released Wednesday.

A Quinnipiac University poll found Trump has a 49 percent favorability rating among American voters, while 17 percent view her in a negative light. Thirty percent of voters surveyed were not knowledgable enough about Trump to have an opinion of her.

Trump is unsurprisingly more popular among Republicans, of whom 79 percent viewed her favorably, than Democrats. Only 24 percent of Democrats had a positive view of Trump.

Her favorability rating has ticked up from 34 percent in a Quinnipiac poll released in mid-April.

“First lady Melania Trump might have the best favorability rating of anyone in or close to the White House, similar to Michelle Obama’s favorability in 2010,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,223 voters nationwide from May 31 to June 5. Trump was out of the public eye for a majority of that time, recovering from kidney surgery at the White House. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.

Trump made her first public appearance outside the White House in weeks on Wednesday. She appeared at FEMA headquarters with President Trump.

“She went through a little rough patch, but she’s doing great,” the president said of his wife.
