An air force veteran who fought in the Korean War has been reunited with a South Korean woman, he helped when she was badly burned as a girl. (April 1)

60 YEARS AFTER THE KOREAN WAR–THIS EMBRACE IS A SYMBOL OF PEACE.

“I can’t tell you how, what a brave young lady this woman was 60 years ago in terms of recovering from her burns. They were very, very severe.”

U.S. AIR FORCE VETERAN RICHARD CADWALLADER HAS BEEN REUNITED WITH A KOREAN WOMAN HE HELPED — WHEN SHE WAS BADLY BURNED AS A GIRL.

AT 72-YEARS OLD–KIM YEON-SOON’S (yee-ahn soonz) SCARS ARE STILL VISIBLE…SHE WAS 12 WHEN AN ACCIDENT WITH AN OIL LAMP LEFT HER WITH THIRD DEGREE BURNS…HER MOTHER SOUGHT HELP AT A NEARBY U.S. BASE–AND FOUND CADWALLADER

CADWALLADER HELPED THE GIRL GET EMERGENCY FIRST-AID AT THE BASE AND LATER ARRANGED FOR HER TO BE FLOWN TO A SURGICAL HOSPITAL FOR MORE ADVANCED TREATMENT.

HE’S SPENT SIX DECADES WONDERING WHAT HAD HAPPENED TO THE GIRL…BUT FINALLY WITH THE HELP OF A VETERANS AFFAIRS GROUP–HE WAS ABLE TO TRACK KIM DOWN.

“She and her mother were two examples of the most courageous people I’ve ever known. So this is a monumental day for me. I am very happy.”
