An Alabama high school is under fire for reprimanding a Jewish student after he shared a video of his history teacher and class engaged in a Nazi salute. According to the student, he was asked to apologize for revealing the video.
On Jan. 18, Mountain Brook High School student Ephraim Tytell was in history class with teacher Joe Webb when the latter allegedly had the class demonstrate a Nazi salute.”He proceeded to show us — ask us to stand up to salute the flag, and he and everyone else did the Nazi salute,” Tytell told local news. “I felt upset, unsure of what’s going on — just kind of shocked.”

After Tytell uploaded the video to social media, school administrators allegedly cornered and reprimanded him. Tytell claims they asked him to apologize to the teacher, which he refused to do. “They proceeded to tell me that I’m making Mountain Brook look bad,” said Tytell.
“The day after, [Webb] made our class, and our class only, put up our phones, and he moved me from sitting in the back of the class to right next to him,” he told local news.
“Any representation that this picture or video represents a Mountain Brook teacher attempting to instruct students on how to use the Nazi Party Salute or instruct them to use the salute towards the American flag is unequivocally false. No students were asked to raise their hand for any reason,” Mountain Brook said in a statement Tuesday.
“Upon investigation, the US History teacher was teaching a lesson on the meaning of symbols in the context of history,” the school explained. The school denied the allegation that Webb asked students to salute the flag.
StopAntisemitism.org picked up the video and circulated it on Twitter, also sharing a photo depicting a student saluting the flag.
“More antisemitic controversy at @mtnbrookhs as an 11th grade history teacher instructs students to perform Nazi salutes as they stand facing the American flag. A few of the students refused to participate; the school’s Principal and Vice Principal are aware. SICKENING,” they wrote.

A Mountain Brook teacher reached out to the organization, asking them to remove the post. “Hi, I’m an educator in the Mtn Brook school system and I feel the need to send you a message asking you to take the photo of Mr. Webb’s class down,” she wrote. “The information you posted is incorrect.”
“We have no words for this lunacy,” they wrote in a tweet sharing the message.
