Ten people were killed and 16 were injured when a van struck multiple people in Toronto on Monday, according to law enforcement.
The driver of the white van is in custody, Deputy Police Chief Peter Yuen said during a press conference. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The driver jumped the sidewalk and plowed into pedestrians in the northern part of downtown Toronto. It’s estimated the driver covered up to a mile in the vehicle, law enforcement said.
It’s unknown whether the crash was intentional or the result of terrorism, and the extent of the injuries is also unknown.
“At this point it’s too early to tell what if any motive there was. We are also unable right now to tell the extent or the number of persons injured,” Meaghan Gray, spokeswoman for the Toronto police, said.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau offered his condolences to those involved in the crash.
“Our thoughts are with all those affected by the terrible incident at Yonge and Finch in Toronto. Thank you to the first responders working at the scene – we’re monitoring the situation closely,” he tweeted.
