Mayor Sheila Dixon says she will continue working to reduce violent crime and to make the city cleaner and greener over the next four years. She is also planning an ambitious initiative to end homelessness within 10 years.
Dixon made the comments as she was sworn in today as Baltimore‘s first female and second black elected mayor. She succeeded Gov. Martin O’Malley as mayor in January and was elected in a landslide this fall. Dixon’s two children, Jasmine and Joshua, stood next to her as she took the oath of office.
Dixon’s inauguration comes on the heels of actions by the Maryland State Prosecutor’s Office which is investigating minority contractors who had ties to Dixon when she was city council president. She has called the probe a “witch hunt.”
