The Democratic National Committee is striking a humble tone while plotting how to ensure Bernie Sanders supporters show up to vote for Joe Biden in November.
“We understand that we’re not entitled to your vote, we have to earn your vote,” DNC Chairman Tom Perez said during a forum when asked how the party can ensure that supporters of the Vermont senator turn out to vote for the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. The Georgetown Institute of Politics and Public Service at the McCourt School of Public Policy hosted the event.
Perez revealed that he has been talking to Jeff Weaver, a senior Sanders adviser who was campaign manager for the 2016 Sanders campaign, and is hoping to meet with him and “learn” from the Sanders operation.
Biden adopted some of Sanders’s policy positions shortly after the Vermont senator dropped out of the race. The former vice president rolled out a plan to lower Medicare’s eligibility age from 65 to 60 and a plan to forgive student debt for low-income and middle-class individuals who attended public colleges and universities.
