Finally someone in the White House decided to spill the beans on the Obama administration’s Iran policy:
“You never know,” Blinken added.
Interesting that on the eve of Israel prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the White House next week, Joe Biden’s national security adviser would say that the strategy is merely delaying having to deal with Iran. That’s not much of a strategy at all, and certainly not one the Israelis believe they can live with.
Blinken also had this to say, as Haaretz reports:
It is true that the Obama administration’s intelligence officials have been playing down the Iranian threat–saying things similar to what Blinken is saying here.
But it’s also true that the president himself has acknowledged that Iran has a “nuclear weapons program.”
“I don’t think that Israel has made a decision on what they need to do,” Obama told Matt Lauer at the beginning of this month. “I think they, like us, believe that Iran has to stand down on its nuclear weapons program. Until they do, I think Israel rightly is going to be very concerned, and we are as well.”
Weird that Blinken would directly contradict the president on this point. And one can only hope that there is actually a strategy to deal with Iran in the Obama administration other than “buying time,” and that Blinken got this point wrong, too.
