Occupy DC creates rift between mayor, police union

The Fraternal Order of Police’s Metropolitan Police Department Labor Committee issued a letter to Mayor Vincent Gray earlier this week claiming that officers are being pulled from neighborhood patrols and reassigned to monitor Occupy DC, and that crime has increased in the District since the Occupy movement arrived three months ago.

They asked Gray to correct a statement he made in a NewsChannel 8 interview about the Occupy movement that he “wasn’t sure” crime was up in the District and that he “didn’t know of a situation” where a neighborhood had been neglected during Occupy protests.

But Gray told The Washington Examiner Friday that he doesn’t believe “there’s been any misleading” and that his office is working on a response to the 40-page letter.

And Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier called the union’s claims “ludicrous” and “crazy” at a press conference Friday.
