Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber said movie of his hit musical Cats was so bad he bought a dog

Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber joined the latest wave of criticism of the movie version of his hit musical Cats, which came out in 2019.

Webber said the end production just never clicked and the movie ended up so bad he went out and bought a therapy dog to cope with the stress.

Cats was off-the-scale all wrong,” Lloyd Webber told Variety. “There wasn’t really any understanding of why the music ticked at all. I saw it and I just thought, ‘Oh, God, no.’ It was the first time in my 70-odd years on this planet that I went out and bought a dog. So the one good thing to come out of it is my little Havanese puppy.”

The dog has now become a constant companion for the aging composer, even flying with him as an “emotional support dog.”

Lloyd Webber once decided to warn a flight ahead of time that he would have an emotional support animal, and the flight asked if he could provide proof that he needed the dog.

“I said, ‘Yes, just see what Hollywood did to my musical Cats.’ Then the approval came back with a note saying, ‘No doctor’s report required,” Lloyd Webber said.

The translation of the hit musical to the big screen was originally set to be directed by Steven Spielberg. However, it eventually was passed into the hands of Tom Hooper, the director responsible for the Les Miserables film adaption.

Cats is one of Broadway’s and London’s West End’s longest-running productions.

Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera is the longest-running show on Broadway. The movie stars Jennifer Hudson, Taylor Swift, James Corden, and Sir Ian McKellen.
