Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota joined former Vice President Joe Biden in saying that a socialist presidential candidate would hurt the Democratic Party in the general election.
Klobuchar revealed her skepticism to the idea during the Democratic primary’s Friday night debate. The topic began when one of the moderators asked Biden about his recent criticism of independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders suggesting that he wouldn’t be able to help fellow Democrats running in more centrist or conservative districts.
The former vice president stood by those remarks, saying, “I think that’s the label the president is going to lay on everyone running with Bernie if he’s the nominee.” ABC News’s George Stephanopoulos then asked if any other candidates fell the same way, which is when Klobuchar raised her hand.
“Bernie and I work together all the time, but I think we are not going to be able to outdivide the divider-in-chief, and I think we need someone to head up this ticket that actually brings people with her instead of shoving them out,” Klobuchar explained.
She continued, “I add to that, being able to bring in independents, like you have in this state, as well as moderate Republicans because there are so many of them out there that are looking for a candidate. And truthfully, Donald Trump’s worst nightmare is a candidate that will bring people in from the middle.”
