Whereas there were once more than 2,000 Kmart stores across the United States, only three will remain after one closes in New Jersey.
The Kmart located in Avenel is set to shut down permanently April 16, according to ABC7NY.
“You’re always thinking about it because stores are closing all over, but it’s still sad,” Michelle Yavorksy, a cashier at the Avenel location, told the Associated Press, adding that she would miss her workplace of roughly 2 1/2 years.
FEDS TAKE OVER PENSIONS FOR SEARS, KMART WORKERS
After Kmart filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2002, hedge fund executive Edward Lampert oversaw a merger of Sears and Kmart in 2005. But with competition from stores such as Walmart and Target as well as the rise of e-commerce, the struggles continued, and Kmart’s parent company Sears Holdings filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2018.
After the Avenel location closes, only the stores in Westwood, New Jersey, Long Island, New York, and Miami will be left.
