The political organization run by former Vice President Mike Pence is launching an ad campaign targeting an Iowa swing district leading up to the midterm elections.

The group, Advancing American Freedom, said the buy was part of a larger $10 million advertising blitz it announced in March targeting more than a dozen House Democrats on domestic energy independence amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Pence is seen as a possible Republican presidential candidate in 2024, and Iowa is home to the first caucus in the presidential primary process. He visited the Iowa State Fair this month, a frequent stop for those with aspirations of higher office.
In a statement, Pence said, “In order to set the United States back on a path of energy independence, we need Congress to support American energy production.”
“It’s time … to demonstrate American strength by restarting the Keystone pipeline, restoring oil and natural gas leases, and standing up for American energy,” Pence added.
The group said the six-figure ad buy will air on cable and digital in Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District, where Rep. Cindy Axne (D) is seeking reelection in a swing district Republicans are looking to flip in November. It will be their third ad buy in the district this year, AAF said, adding that the advertisement was filmed there.
The ad takes aim at comments by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg about how owners of electric vehicles no longer need to worry about gas prices that were panned by Republicans, seeking to tie Axne to them.

The nonpartisan Cook Political Report has ranked the race as “lean Republican,” making the seat a possible pickup opportunity for the party as it attempts to win a majority in November.
