Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said Monday evening he will grant some residents an extension to file their federal taxes after record-setting rainfall prompted flood warnings for half of the state.
Abbott said his office reached out to the Internal Revenue Service Monday about pushing back the deadline for those who had not filed their taxes and are under flood warnings, according to a report.
The move comes hours before the midnight deadline goes into effect. Texas does not have income taxes. Tax day was pushed back to April 18 this year because Emancipation Day in the District of Columbia was celebrated on Friday, shutting the D.C. government.
Some areas of the Lone Star State have reported more than a foot of rain.
First responders have rescued more than 1,000 people, prompting Abbott to declare a state disaster for nine countries, with more to be added.
Four people have been killed in the storms and thousands others have lost electricity.
