CNN White House correspondent John Harwood said Republican lawmakers are willing to commit violence against their mothers to remain in President Trump’s good graces.
Harwood discussed a lawsuit spearheaded by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton that claims that Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, and Wisconsin unconstitutionally changed how their elections were to be held ahead of the general election. Over 100 House Republicans signed a brief in support of the lawsuit, which Harwood argued to CNN host Kate Bolduan was because of their fear of being criticized by Trump on Twitter.
“What we’re seeing, Kate, is a demonstration by House Republicans of the extent of the rot inside the Republican Party right now. These people know what Donald Trump is. As Ted Cruz said in 2016, he’s a pathological liar. Marco Rubio called him a con artist,” Harwood said Friday.
Harwood called the lawsuit “preposterous” and said GOP lawmakers only support the lawsuit out of fear of Trump and pursuit of power.
“These are people who, if Donald Trump said, ‘I’m going to trash you on Twitter unless you go smack your mom in the face,’ they would go smack their moms in the face and try to explain it to them afterward,” Harwood said. “In reality, what they’re doing is smacking American democracy in the face.”

Eighteen states, including Florida, Missouri, and South Carolina, support the lawsuit to overturn the results of the election.
Despite many claims, Attorney General William Barr announced earlier in December that the Justice Department has “not seen fraud on a scale that could have affected a different outcome in the election.”
