Iowa Predictions

Over at the Campaign Standard, Terry Eastland, Stephen Hayes, and the Cardinal have all posted their predictions for tonight’s caucuses. And Dean Barnett’s predictions are here. They all agree that Obama is likely to come out on top, which will be devastating for the Clinton campaign, but there is some dissent on which Republican will come out victorious–and who will grab that all important third place finish. For what it’s worth, I agree with the Obama consensus. And I’m inclined to think Huckabee will pull it out. If McCain can take third, and I think he can, his odds of winning the nomination should go up dramatically. Also worth noting, this latest poll from Rasmussen. Only one candidate is viewed favorable by more than half the electorate:

Favorable–Unfavorable McCain: 53–27 Edwards: 49–42 Clinton: 48–50 Obama: 43–51 Thompson: 42–42 Giuliani 40–55 Huckabee: 40–47 Romney: 38–51

So the most strident supporter of the surge is viewed most favorably, and Clinton and Edwards are both viewed more favorably than Obama. It’s a surprising result, and it should upset many of the assumptions about where this election is going.
