The United Kingdom’s Prince Philip has left the hospital in time to join Queen Elizabeth II and the rest of the British royal family for Christmas.
The Duke of Edinburgh checked into the hospital on Friday as a “precautionary measure,” the palace said. His hospital visit is said to have been recommended by a doctor.
“His Royal Highness would like to thank everyone who sent their good wishes,” a Buckingham Palace spokesman said on Tuesday.
Philip, 98, joined the queen at her Sandringham Estate in Norfolk on Tuesday. The monarch, who is 93, had arrived at the estate on Friday after recording her annual Christmas Day message, set to air on BBC One on Christmas Day.
Prince Charles, the royal couple’s son, said his father was being “looked after very well” on Monday and added, “When you get to that age, things don’t work so well.”
Philip has had a number of health problems in recent years. In 2011, he was treated for a blocked coronary artery. In 2012 and 2017, he was hospitalized with a bladder infection, and he checked into King Edward VII Hospital for a hip replacement last year. He retired from public life in 2017.
