Two Pepco contractors are accused of stealing more than $70,000 of copper from the utility company.

James A. Price, 44, and Anthony J. Tate, 37, were arrested on theft charges in the scheme, Prince George’s County police said.

Police said Pepco notified authorities after the company learned that thousands of dollars of copper wiring had been stolen. Price and Tate are accused of stealing copper wiring while they were working for Rockingham Construction Company, which Pepco had contracted to complete underground wiring at multiple locations.

The pair stole the copper wire, then sold the wire to a recycling company, police said.

The thefts occurred over a four-year period, NBC Washington reported.

Price, of Mechanicsville, has been released on $25,000 bond, according to court records. A hearing in his case is scheduled for Aug. 22. Court records show Tate was released on $10,000 bond and has a Sept. 9 hearing.
