Chelsea Manning is losing treatment for gender dysphoria

Under President Obama’s commutation of Army Pvt. Chelsea Manning’s sentence, the transgender soldier will lose her military healthcare benefits, including treatment for gender dysphoria.

While Manning will be allowed to leave the Army’s prison at Fort Leavenworth on May 17 approximately six years earlier than scheduled, it may come at a cost of years of treatments she has received to transition from male to female.

Manning lost her Pentagon-funded gender-reassignment surgery after Obama announced his executive actions on Tuesday. Manning had been sentenced to 35 years and served seven years for leaking hundreds of thousands of classified documents to WikiLeaks.

As part of her release, Manning will undergo a 40-hour transition program provided to all inmates, according to a report.
