Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz said Friday that he still has confidence in the Justice Department despite the controversial decision not to pursue charges against former FBI acting Director Andrew McCabe but added that there’s a “little swamp left to be drained.”
“The disgrace is that Andrew McCabe is not going to be behind bars,” Gaetz told Fox News in response to seeing a clip showing McCabe suggesting that the mere thought of being charged with a crime was a “disgrace.”
“I still think there’s work to be done to have folks who reflect the right views and values that the senior leadership that the FBI have,” Gaetz said regarding whether he felt let down by Barr. “I have total confidence in Bill Barr. I think the Durham indictments will help to drain the swamp over there.”
Gaetz then pointed out that there is work to be done to fulfill President Trump’s campaign promise to “drain the swamp.”
“I think there’s still probably a little swamp left to be drained at the Department of Justice,” Gaetz said.
It was revealed Friday that the Department of Justice will not pursue charges against McCabe for allegedly lying to investigators about media leaks.
“We write to inform you that, after careful consideration, the government has decided not to pursue criminal charges against your client, Andrew G. McCabe, arising from the referral by the Office of Inspector General,” prosecutors wrote to McCabe’s defense team. “Based on the totality of circumstances and all of the information known to the government at this time, we consider the matter closed.”
DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz detailed several instances in a 2018 report where McCabe “lacked candor” while speaking to investigators on four separate occasions, including three times under oath.
