Washington, D.C., ranked fittest city in the U.S.

Washington, D.C., has been ranked the fittest U.S. city for the third consecutive year, according to a report released Wednesday.

The District beat out 49 other metropolitan areas across the country with a score of 77.9 out of 100, the Anthem Foundation and American College of Sports Medicine found. Washington’s many parks, biking trails, high walkability level and low levels of certain diseases contributed to its ranking.

Other cities that topped the list for most active were Minneapolis, Minn.; Denver, Colo.; Portland, Ore.; San Francisco, Calif.; and Seattle, Wash.

At the bottom of the list were Indianapolis, Ind.; Oklahoma City, Okla.; Louisville, Ky.; Memphis, Tenn.; and Nashville, Tenn.

Despite claiming the top spot on fitness, Washington finished second place in a 2013 study by Detox that ranked states based on the number of drinks residents consumed.

A net 23.5 percent of Washingtonians admitted to binge-drinking or consuming at least four beverage in a single night. But unlike the first-place finisher, Wisconsin, the District is not a place where locals sit inside a sizable portion of the year because of cold weather.
