Trump’s loans attacked by Death Cab for Cutie

Alt-rock band Death Cab for Cutie released a song Monday attacking Donald Trump for the million-dollar loan he got from his father that jumpstarted business career.

The band’s song, simply called “Million Dollar Loan,” is the first in a series of 30 songs that will be released through Election Day on Nov. 8 from various high-profile artists who are “united in their desire to speak out against the ignorant, divisive and hateful campaign of Donald Trump,” according to the YouTube summary of the video.

Death Cab for Cutie’s song includes lyrics like, “You reap what you’ve sown from the million-dollar loan/call your father on the phone and get that million-dollar loan.”

“Lyrically, ‘Million Dollar Loan’ deals with a particularly tone-deaf moment in Donald Trump’s ascent to the Republican nomination,” band frontman Ben Gibbard was quoted as saying in the video’s YouTube summary. “While campaigning in New Hampshire last year, he attempted to cast himself as a self-made man by claiming he built his fortune with just a ‘small loan of a million dollars’ from his father.”

“Not only has this statement been proven to be wildly untrue, he was so flippant about it,” he added. “It truly disgusted me. Donald Trump has repeatedly demonstrated that he is unworthy of the honor and responsibility of being president of the United States of America, and in no way, shape or form represents what this country truly stands for. He is beneath us.”
