Twitter accused of censoring ‘Zombie Hillary’

Twitter users on Sunday accused the site of trying to suppress the “Zombie Hillary” hashtag, which they had been using to reference an appearance by a frail Hillary Clinton over the weekend.

The issue, users noted, was that when they began typing in the hashtag, the site encouraged them to misspell it. “Looks like Twitter is trying to split the #ZombieHillary hashtag by inventing #ZombieHilary [with] only [one] ‘l’,” one noted. Another concurred: “#ZombieHilary is what Twitter is allowing to trend. #ZombieHillary being suppressed.”

Some users expressed amusement at the alleged censorship, which they’ve come to expect. “#ZombieHillary is autocomplete missing an ‘l’ …Twitter don’t ever change,” said one. “Oh twitter, so blatant in what you don’t want to trend #ZombieHillary auto completes into #ZombieHilary,” said another.

Users began using the hashtag in reference to a Saturday evening appearance by Clinton at which she referenced explosions that took place in New Jersey and New York City. Speaking slowly, Clinton appeared to contradict herself when she said she had been “briefed about the bombings,” but subsequently attacked Donald Trump for using the same term, saying it was “important to know the facts before responding.”

Allegations of censorship on Twitter began in July when users noted that “DNC Leaks” abruptly stopped trending, only to be replaced by “DNC Leak” after outrage ensued. The hashtag referred to documents leaked from the Democratic National Committee that ultimately led to the resignation of top party officials.

Responding to the allegation in July, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey would say only that it was “false.” The site declined to offer further explanation.
