Marco Rubio endorses George Allen ahead of campaign event

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., endorsed Virginia Senate candidate George Allen this morning.

The two are scheduled to appear side by side at an Arlington campaign event.

Rubio is a popular freshman lawmaker among conservative circles and is thought to be one of several finalists for presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s vice president. His stop on the campaign trail comes two days after Allen officially captured the GOP nomination for Virginia’s open U.S. Senate seat, and follows other similar high-profile endorsements from Republican senators, like Wisconsin Tea Party favorite Sen. Ron Johnson.

Rubio never would have endorsed Allen’s November opponent, Democrat and former governor Tim Kaine. But his stop in Virginia signifies Senate Republicans are willing to stick their neck out to win Virginia, a critical battleground in the fight for control of the Senate and the White House.
