Is John Kerry as Bad As ISIS?

Last Thursday, Secretary of State John Kerry met in Washington with leaders of forty-five nations to discuss the Islamic State, which he calls “ISIL,” and terrorism. Refering to that meeting, Kerry said Friday during a remarks at the Vienna International Center in Austria that working on climate change, specifically focused in these Vienna talks on chemicals used for cooling, is of “equal importance” to the fight against terrorism:

Yesterday, I met in Washington with 45 nations—defense ministers and foreign ministers—as we were working together on the challenge of Daesh, ISIL, and terrorism. It’s hard for some people to grasp it, but what we—you—are doing here right now is of equal importance because it has the ability to literally save life on the planet itself.

The Vienna talks aim to reduce and eliminate the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) in refrigeration and air conditioning. Kerry says HFCs are “exceptionally potent drivers of climate change”:

But the truth is our goal for these talks—amending the Montreal Protocol to phase down HFCs—is one of the single most important unitary steps that we could possibly take at this moment to stave off the worst impacts of climate change and to protect the future for people in every single corner of the globe.

In April 2015, however, Kerry’s State Department spent thousands of dollars to install temporary air conditioning for President Obama’s town hall in Kingston, Jamaica. As THE WEEKLY STANDARD reported at the time, about $5,300 was spent for generators and air conditioners for the seventy-five minute session with the president.

Local weather reports said the temperatures were in the 80s on the day of the president’s visit.
