California wildfire now 80 percent contained

MARIPOSA, Calif. (AP) — Crews have made more progress against a wildfire in Central California that has destroyed two homes.

State fire officials reported on Thursday that the fire east of Lake McClure in Mariposa County was 80 percent contained and full containment was expected by June 2. The fire has burned 677 acres.

The fire has led to eight injuries, including a moderate cut from a chain saw sustained by an inmate who was aiding the effort. Seven other firefighters suffered minor injuries.

No other structures were considered to be threatened.

The fire was initially thought to have burned a larger area, but officials say better mapping led to the revised figure.

Some 50 residents were urged to leave for their own safety after the fire broke out on Monday. They were allowed back into their homes on Wednesday.
