Saturday and Sunday: Race in America: Where Are We Now? at the Washington DC Jewish Community Center
With David Mamet’s play “Race” as an anchor, the Washington DC Jewish Community Center presents an “arts and ideas” weekend this Saturday and Sunday titled “Race in America: Where Are We Now?”
In addition to three performances of “Race,” the weekend will feature panel discussions, live music and film screenings. The minifestival is a collaboration across all of the JCC’s art departments.
“The issue of race impacts all of us on an intimate level,” said DCJCC CEO Carole Zawatsky.
With Mamet’s “Race” already scheduled, the rest of the weekend started to fall into place about six months ago. Zawatsky said that the performance was a natural centerpiece for the weekend because of its power and ability to dig into issues of race and gender.
Zawatsky added that art plays a major role in looking at exploring challenging issues such as race.
“I have a belief that the arts have a capacity to pierce our souls,” she said.

Sunday: The Wammies at the State Theatre
This 27th annual celebration of local music is back once again. The Washington Area Music Association recognizes the best D.C.-area musicians in multiples categories. Performers include Ruthie & the Wranglers and a tribute to Chuck Brown featuring Be’la Dona.
