An MSNBC legal analyst said Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh had the characteristics of a “mean drunk” during his hearing Thursday, wherein Kavanaugh pushed back against accusations of sexual misconduct that date back more than 30 years ago when he was a teenager.

Daniel Goldman, a contributor to NBC News and former U.S. assistant attorney, said Kavanaugh’s accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, who testified earlier in the day, seemed believable and that her testimony may complicate the confirmation vote for Republican Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine.
“And then you see, on the other hand, someone like Brett Kavanaugh, who is exhibiting much more anger and vitriol and defiance than we saw in his previous hearings,” Goldman said. “As a prosecutor, I see some of his reactions and I think to myself, huh, this is kind of consistent with someone who might be a mean drunk.”
In addition to the allegations of sexual assault, Kavanaugh has been described by some former classmates as a heavy user of alcohol, sometimes to the point of blacking out, which Kavanaugh has also denied.
