Biden calls Trump ‘sinful’ for targeting medical deferments

ROCK HILL, South Carolina — Joe Biden slammed the Trump administration’s latest policy targeting medical deferments for immigrants in the country as “sinful.”

“It’s sinful what’s happening. You would have thought that even for him, children with cystic fibrosis and cancer are off-limits,” the former vice president said to a crowd of 300 at Clinton College in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Biden’s remarks referred to the Trump administration lifting of deportation protections for immigrant families currently seeking medical treatment.

A number of families this month received letters from United States Citizenship and Immigration Services stating they had 33 days to leave the country or risk a removal hearing in immigration court.

“We are running out of words to condemn the inhumanity of this administration. An administration that pulls children from the arms of their parents and stalks families in their neighborhoods will now deport children who are in life-saving treatment for dire conditions like cancer,” Biden said in a written statement released during his remarks.

Criticism of Trump administration immigration policies is a staple of Biden’s speeches. At an Aug. 9 speech in Iowa, for instance, he called for the U.S. to increase the number of immigrants and refugees from its current acceptance rate.
