Three in four Americans say Donald Trump’s presidential election victory over Democratic rival Hillary Clinton was legitimate, according to the results of an ABC News/Washington Post poll released Sunday.
On the first weekend following Election Day, 74 percent of Americans said that Trump was elected legitimately. The poll comes after days of large demonstrations protesting Trump’s win in cities across the U.S. Many of the protesters point to his loss in the popular vote, despite the fact he won the Electoral College count.
Ninety-nine percent of Trump supporters approved of the outcome, while 58 percent of Clinton supporters said the same. Of those who did not support either candidate, 62 percent said Trump’s win was fair.
Fourteen percent of respondents said they strongly felt that Trump winning the election was not legitimate.
Before the election, ABC News notes, only 68 percent of Trump’s supporters said they were ready to accept the result of the election as legitimate, after the candidate said multiple times that the election process was “rigged.” Eighty-seven percent of Clinton’s supporters said the same at the time.
The national poll of 865 adults was conducted via landline and cellphone between Nov. 9 and Nov. 11. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points, including the design effect.
