The duty of a fact checker can occasionally be condensed to the simple act of reading an article and verifying the sources. It’s a tough, tough job.
Facebook users flagged this headline from a Fox affiliate in Fresno, California:
“ALERT: Over 200 million eggs recalled in Va. and other states due to salmonella concerns”
It would appear that these users chose not to read the article or click on the FDA link it provides, which lists all potentially affected eggs.
“Through an abundance of caution Rose Acre Farms of Seymour, Indiana is voluntarily recalling 206,749,248 eggs,” the FDA said in its announcement Friday. “[The eggs] have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella Braenderup, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.”
These eggs were distributed to several states, including Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. Rose Acre Farms recalled the eggs due to several reported illnesses on the East Coast. So far, 22 illnesses have been linked to the eggs.
