P.G. will be ‘first in integrity,’ Baker vows at inaguration

New Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker vowed Monday that his administration would be the most ethical in the Washington region, a proclamation made within feet of two charged felons — his predecessor and a new County Council member.

“We are here to celebrate a new day in Price George’s County,” Baker said after taking the oath of office during a blisteringly cold inauguration ceremony Monday. “We must provide an open, efficient and transparent government.”

However, County Executive Jack Johnson and his wife, newly sworn-in Councilwoman Leslie Johnson were sitting in Baker’s shadow, a reminder of the scandal that will continue to dominate perception of the Prince George’s government.

The Johnsons are  accused of trying to conceal thousands of dollars in bribes from developers.

“This was a great event,” Jack Johnson said after the ceremony, refusing to answer questions about his wife or his arrest. “This is a day for celebration.”

Baker didn’t wait long to put a stamp on his administration, however, as he announced eight new appointments, including an interim police chief.
