California Gov. Gavin Newsom was widely mocked after telling Caifornians to stop nonessential gatherings the same week he was caught and apologized for violating his own guidelines.
“Due to the rise in #COVID19 cases, CA is issuing a limited Stay at Home Order,” the California Democrat tweeted Thursday. “Non-essential work and gatherings must stop from 10pm-5am in counties in the purple tier. This will take effect at 10pm on Saturday and remain for 1 month. Together–we can flatten the curve again.”

Newsom was immediately criticized over the report this week that showed him dining inside with a large group of people, some of who were medical professionals, at a swanky California wine country restaurant without a mask in defiance of state restrictions.
The Spectator USA contributor Stephen Miller responded to the tweet with a photo of Newsom dining at the restaurant, The French Laundry.

“And @CAgovernor Newsom just announced nightly curfews, 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Dec. 21,” former New York Times reporter Alex Berenson tweeted. “The French Laundry and mostly peaceful terrorists are excepted. California has 40 million people; 5,300 are hospitalized with Covid, down from almost 9,000 in July.”

“It is time for civil disobedience,” director Nick Searcy tweeted. “It is time to deliberately disobey @gavinNewsom‘s ridiculous order. Does the virus get stronger and infect more people after 10 PM? What kind of ‘science’ is this based on? Let’s all go outside and sleep oin the sidewalk after 10 PM on Sat.”

The new order, issued by the California Department of Public health, prohibits nonessential activity outside the home between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. in the most strongly restricted or “purple tier” counties. The rule takes effect on Saturday and will last through at least Dec. 21.
“The virus is spreading at a pace we haven’t seen since the start of this pandemic and the next several days and weeks will be critical to stop the surge. We are sounding the alarm,” Newsom said in a statement. “It is crucial that we act to decrease transmission and slow hospitalizations before the death count surges. We’ve done it before and we must do it again.”
