Where’s the funding for a Polish museum?

Re: “Latino museum panel shovels tax dollars to political patrons,” editorial, Dec. 17

Are you kidding? There’s going to be a taxpayer-funded Latino museum? Why not a Polish museum in Washington?

Poles such as military heroes Tadeusz Kosiuszko and Casimir Pulaski, scientist Marie Sklodowska (Madam Curie) and Karol Wojytla (Pope John Paul II) surely also contributed a great deal.

Cayman Islands is no refuge for tax evaders

Re: “To the Cayman Islands, with love (and U.S. $’s),” Opinion Zone, Dec. 10

In response to Neil Hrab’s blog post on the Cayman Islands, I have a simple response: Poppycock.

The Cayman Islands are a jurisdiction with full tax transparency. Tax evasion is a nonissue. That is why the (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) gave us their seal of approval by putting us on their “white list.”

We believe in the power of tax competition and the principle that lower taxes are better for capital flow and job creation. Profits generated by Cayman entities are taxed in the jurisdictions in which those profits are made, in full accordance with the law.

Mr. Hrab ignores the substantial benefits that Cayman’s financial industry confers on the U.S. economy. Up to 80 percent of the United States’ $2.6 trillion in the Cayman funds industry is invested into the United States — creating jobs and tax revenues.

Christmas decorations are a waste

It’s that time of year again. Drive anywhere and you will see a veritable potlatch of lighted outdoor Christmas decorations. What a shameful waste of money and energy.

Wouldn’t it be better if that money were used to help the poor, the sick, the homeless, and the jobless instead of being thrown away on tasteless, frivolous junk? The man whose birthday is supposedly being celebrated would have been appalled.
