David Cameron stands by Trump critiques

British Prime Minster David Cameron isn’t backing down from his war of words with Donald Trump, and “stands by” his critiques of the GOP candidate, Downing Street said Monday.

“The prime minister has made his views on Donald Trump’s comments very clear. He disagrees with them,” a Cameron spokesman said Monday. “He continues to believe that preventing Muslims from entering the U.S. is divisive, stupid and wrong. He stands by his comments.”

The comments come after Trump said in a interview published Monday that he doesn’t expect to have a “very good relationship” with Cameron should he be voted into the White House.

Cameron called Trump “divisive, stupid and wrong” in December for his proposed ban on Muslims entering into the United States.

Trump’s foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulpos then told The New York Times in April the prime minster should say sorry, to which a Cameron spokesperson said he had “no intention of withdrawing his comments.”

Cameron’s spokesman was asked Monday who the prime minister would prefer be elected this fall, to which he said Cameron will not comment on another country’s election.

“He is committed to maintaining the special relationship,” he said. He added that while no meeting or call between Cameron and Trump is planned, the prime minister would consider it if one were proposed.

Cameron is not the only British politician Trump is fighting. Newly elected London Mayor Sadiq Khan and Trump are also exchanging words about Trump’s proposed Muslim ban.

The latest update was an offer from Khan to Trump, in which the former has offered to “educate” the latter on Islam and introduce him to “hundreds of thousands” of Muslims living in the United Kingdom.
