The Alexandria City Council has created a workgroup to discuss the $50 million Waterfront Plan over the summer.
While the council enters recess for July and August, the new group will consider the current controversial plan and alternatives presented by critics, then return to the council with a recommendation in the fall.
Council members tossed around ideas for the group’s composition before agreeing on Councilman Rob Krupicka’s eight-member proposal, which included one non-voting city council member, one member of the waterfront committee, one member of the Old Town Civic Association and five citizens chosen at-large.
Before the vote, councilmembers proposed everything from having every councilmember appoint two group members, to including a representative from the Archaeology Commission.
The need for speed on the much-discussed issue led the council to adopt Krupicka’s proposal unanimously Tuesday.
“We’re wasting time here,” Councilman Paul Smedberg said. “We’ve got a lot to do.”
