Russian journalist killed in Kiev

UPDATE: On Wednesday it was revealed that Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko is actually alive, with Ukrainian officials explaining Babchenko’s death was faked to catch help the people who were trying to assassinate him.

ORIGINAL STORY:

A Russian journalist who was a staunch critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin was shot and killed at his apartment in Kiev.

Ukrainian police said Arkady Babchenko was discovered by his wife bleeding in their apartment Tuesday. An ambulance was called, but Babchenko died on the way to the hospital, the Associated Press reported.

Ukrainian law enforcement said in a statement posted to Facebook he was shot in the back.

Babchenko, 41, worked as a military correspondent for several Russian news outlets. Last year, he left Russia and went into exile. The journalist, a fierce critic of the Kremlin, said he was worried he might be detained and was receiving threats.

Before starting a career in journalism, Babchenko served in the Russian army.

Babchenko reportedly moved to Kiev in the fall and was a host for the Crimean Tatar television station ATR, according to the Associated Press.
