A Clinton political consultant demanded to know in a Fourth of July tweet why President Trump was “hellbent” on ceding power to Russian President Vladimir Putin, when the holiday celebrates U.S. independence from British sovereignty.
“242 years ago today, our nation’s founders declared we would never again be dominated by a tyrannical foreign despot. Many have died for that cause,” Paul Begala wrote on Twitter on Wednesday, referring to the Second Continental Congress’s adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
“Now our President seems hellbent on surrendering our sovereignty to Putin’s Russia. Why?” he continued.

Trump has been criticized for downplaying Russian attempts to influence the results of the 2016 presidential election. But he has told reporters he will broach the topic of Russian interference in U.S. elections when he meets Putin in Helsinki on July 16.
Begala was a senior strategist on former President Bill Clinton’s successful 1992 campaign for the White House.
