Irish prime minister tells Trump: Irish companies are bringing ‘good jobs to America’

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said Irish companies are making greater investment in U.S. companies and are bringing “good jobs” to the U.S.

“Since you took office, Mr. President, 59 Irish companies have made new investments in this country. So we are bringing jobs and good jobs to America,” Varadkar said while standing next to President Trump during the White House’s annual Shamrock Bowl ceremony on Thursday.

According to Enterprise Ireland, the Irish state agency that oversees the development of Irish business, 59 new offices from Enterprise Ireland-supported companies were launched in the U.S. in 2017. The agency claims that number is up 18 percent from 2016.

Varadkar also made mention of undocumented Irish immigrants who are “living in the shadows” — a comment that comes after more than 150 people suspected of violating federal immigration laws were arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement last month.

“I know that the Irish people who have made their lives here, including those who are undocumented and living in the shadows, love this country dearly,” Varadkar said.

Prior to the Shamrock Bowl, Trump also said he would visit Ireland, but did not provide a time frame for when he would do so.

“I will,” Trump said. “I love it.”
