Etienne appeared angry upon leaving the stadium and seemingly spit at a fan, footage released by Barstool Sports Arizona showed.

The player, who was benched by UCLA for the season due to a knee injury, was able to return to his team’s locker room before university police told him that he would be placed under arrest and issued a citation for assault with “the intent to injure, provoke or insult,” a spokesperson from the University of Arizona police told ESPN. Etienne was not placed in handcuffs.

“UCLA Athletics is committed to and expects the highest level of sportsmanship,” UCLA said in a prepared statement late Thursday. “We are aware of the incident involving a student-athlete at tonight’s men’s basketball game, and the matter is under review.”

The California athlete will have a court date in Arizona, but he may be able to address the citation without returning in person, according to police.
