Vince Gray clarifies muni bond veto to Kwame Brown

D.C. Mayor Vince Gray doesn’t want his squabble with council Chairman Kwame Brown over Gray’s vetoing a council bill that would have delayed the implementation of a tax on municipal bonds to dominate the news. So he wrote a letter to Brown saying just that, but only after going point-by-point over seven pages to “clarify” the points Brown made to the media after the veto.

“I don’t want one issue, over which we disagree, to distract from the fact that the District has approved its first structurally balanced budget in four years,” Gray wrote in a letter to Brown sent on Monday. He added that the budget is also under the 12 percent debt cap and helps rebuild the city’s beleaguered savings account. “Those should be the headlines that we read in the newspaper, talk about with District residents, and use to make the case with the rating agencies.”

That was all in the conclusion. It followed five clarifications of statements Brown made to the press. You can read the letter here
