Sun buyout seeks to pare 50 employees companywide

A day after the Tribune Company announced projected personnel cuts in two of its other newspaper properties, The Baltimore Sun Company announced that it would trim 50 employees from its ranks through buyouts.

“Some employees will be eligible and some not, depending on job title and seniority,” said Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild President M. William Salganik, who attended the Tuesday buyout meeting with The Sun management. Salganik estimated that only about 85 of the approximately 1,500-employee company would qualify.

The deal, according to Salganik, amounts to a week?s pay for every six months of service, up to one year ? with June 1 as the last work day.

“Voluntary buyouts are certainly better than involuntary layoffs,” said Salganik, who as a business reporter, does not qualify. “I don’t see how this helps us in the long run.”
