Taxpayers thwarted from filing online Tuesday before the deadline because the IRS payment site was down will get an extension on their taxes, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said.
Tuesday was the last day for filing federal taxes. But people going to the IRS page for paying taxes faced an error message for most of the day.
Mnuchin suggested that people who couldn’t get through would receive an extension, after he appeared at a Tax Day event in New Hampshire with Ivanka Trump, according to the Associated Press.
The IRS later clarified that taxpayers would receive a one-day extension, allowing them until midnight of Wednesday to file.
“This is the busiest tax day of the year, and the IRS apologizes for the inconvenience this system issue caused for taxpayers,” acting IRS Commissioner David Kautter said in a statement. “The IRS appreciates everyone’s patience during this period. The extra time will help taxpayers affected by this situation.”
