Meals on Wheels seeks to grow in Fairfax Co.

More homebound seniors in Centreville and Chantilly could have hot meals delivered daily if Fairfax County’s Meals on Wheels program succeeds in a planned western expansion.

The Fairfax County Area Agency on Aging, which administers the program, is seeking about 30 volunteer drivers to help the agency extend a new route in the area, said Jan Kikuchi, supervisor of the agency’s nutrition unit.

She said the western Fairfax County communities have seen a growing need for the service.

“I think that we’re meeting the need [of homebound seniors], with this one area being the exception,” Kikuchi said.

The county’s Meals on Wheels program serves about 500 people each day, she said, and operates through more than 1,500 volunteers each year.

The clientele typically range in age from 80 to 85. Kikuchi said the success of the expansion will depend on how many volunteers sign up.

Beyond a paid staff that assesses clients, volunteers handle “everything else having to do with the day-to-day operations” of Meals on Wheels, she said. The agency hopes to serve 16 more seniors through the new route.
